1159 South was formed by a group of concerned citizens who have deep roots in south Springfield and love this community. We exist to significantly improve the economic conditions of low-income people, housing, appearance of distressed places, and sense of community in the historically African American community of southwest Springfield, OH through targeted investments in people and places.

Our initial work is focused on engaging the community and improving neighborhoods one block at a time by transforming vacant lots at key intersections into vibrant public spaces and improving distressed properties. We are also deeply engaged in supporting small businesses with technical and financial resources.

Our core program areas are:

We are grateful to each and every one of our donors and especially acknowledge the catalytic support of The Springfield Foundation, Crabill Family Foundation, and Community Health Foundation for their strong commitment to improving southwest Springfield and other underserved areas of the community.

We also shout-out the Springfield Small Business Development Center's SBA Community Navigator grant that is providing much needed assistance to underserved entrepreneurs in southwest Springfield through 1159 South Community Development Corp.

Community Engagement

1159 South’s motto, “From the Community, For the Community,” is at the heart of everything we do. Lasting improvement is possible only if the community is involved early, often, and thoroughly.
